How do you book housing for a contract that starts in January?
To book housing for a contract that starts in January, start as soon as the start date is in your signed contract, because hosts can be slow to answer over the holidays and well-placed furnished rentals are booked early. Check every listing before you pay anything, and make sure the booking's dates and cancellation terms match your contract.
When should you start looking for January housing?
Start once the start date is written into your contract, not before. A date that is still moving makes a booking you may have to cancel, and a strict cancellation policy can cost you the deposit.
Once it is signed, move quickly. Hosts and property managers can be slower to reply in the last weeks of the year, and a contract that starts in the first week of January leaves little time after the holidays to search in person.
What does your housing stipend have to cover?
The stipend is set against the federal lodging rate for the area where you will sleep on the contract. Look the county up on GSA’s per diem rates page and compare it with what furnished places there actually cost; fair market rent against GSA lodging shows how the two measures differ.
Price the whole stay, not just the nightly rate: cleaning fees, deposits, utilities and parking can each add to the cost, and a place a little further from the facility may leave more of the stipend for you.
How do you check that a rental listing is real?
When you book from another state you usually can't see the place first, so check the listing before you pay. The FTC advises you to “Search online for the rental location’s address along with the name of the property owner or rental company,” and, “If you can, look at the property before you sign or pay.”
Treat pressure and payment method as warnings. The FTC says that “If anyone pressures you to make a decision quickly, walk away,” and that if anyone insists you can only pay by wire transfer, gift card or cryptocurrency, it is a scam. A rent far below the area's other listings is another sign to slow down.
What should the booking say about your dates?
Match the booking to the contract: the move-in date a day or two before your first shift, the move-out date after your last, and what happens if the contract is extended or cancelled. Ask the host in writing whether you can extend week to week and what the cancellation terms are if the facility cancels your contract.
The lease and move-in checklist lists what to get in writing before you sign and what to check on the day you arrive.
If you want to know whether a contract you are considering includes housing, ask a ProTherapy recruiter: Find my next contract.
What if you can't find a place before you arrive?
Book a short stay for the first week or two instead, and look for the longer rental once you are there. An extended-stay hotel or a short furnished booking near the facility gives you a base, and seeing places in person removes most of the risk of a listing booked from afar.
Check the short stay's cancellation terms as carefully as a lease's, and count its cost against the stipend for those weeks. Housing options compared sets out what each kind of stay costs and how flexible it is.
Does the agency arrange housing instead?
Some agencies arrange housing on some contracts, which takes the search off your hands but usually comes out of the pay package instead of the stipend. ProTherapy Staffing, which publishes this site, describes its offer this way: “Company-arranged housing on some contracts.”
Ask early whether your contract includes it, and if it does, ask what it would cost you against the stipend you would otherwise take. Then compare that with furnished listings for the same dates, so you choose with both numbers in front of you.
What should you plan for the trip in winter?
A January start often means a winter drive or flight, so leave slack in the plan: aim to arrive a day before your first shift, check the route and the weather before you leave, and have the host's check-in instructions saved offline.
If you are driving, pack what you need for the first night in the car you are driving, not in the boxes behind it. Living on a winter contract covers the weeks after you arrive.
Frequently asked questions
How early should I book housing for a January travel contract?
As soon as the start date is written into your signed contract. Hosts can reply more slowly over the holidays, so a booking left until after them can leave little time to search.
Should I pay a deposit before I see a rental?
Only after you have checked the listing. The FTC advises searching the address with the owner's name and, if you can, looking at the property before you sign or pay, and it says a demand for payment by wire transfer, gift card or cryptocurrency is a scam.
Does a travel therapy agency arrange housing?
Some do on some contracts. ProTherapy Staffing describes its offer as company-arranged housing on some contracts; ask early whether yours includes it and what it would cost against the stipend.
